Quantifying Microstructure in Fiber Crossings with Diffusional Kurtosis
نویسندگان
چکیده
Diffusional Kurtosis Imaging (DKI) is able to capture nonGaussian diffusion and has become a popular complement to the more traditional Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI). In this paper, we demonstrate how strongly the presence of fiber crossings and the exact crossing angle affect measures from diffusional kurtosis, limiting their interpretability as indicators of tissue microstructure. We alleviate this limitation by modeling fiber crossings with a mixture of cylindrically symmetric kurtosis models. Based on results on simulated and on real-world data, we conclude that explicitly including crossing geometry in kurtosis models leads to parameters that are more specific to other aspects of tissue microstructure, such as scale and homogeneity.

Mapping the Orientation of White Matter Fiber Bundles: A Comparative Study of Diffusion Tensor Imaging, Diffusional Kurtosis Imaging, and Diffusion Spectrum Imaging.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE White matter fiber tractography relies on fiber bundle orientation estimates from diffusion MR imaging. However, clinically feasible techniques such as DTI and diffusional kurtosis imaging use assumptions, which may introduce error into in vivo orientation estimates. In this study, fiber bundle orientations from DTI and diffusional kurtosis imaging are compared with diffu...
متن کاملAltered microstructure in temporal lobe epilepsy: a diffusional kurtosis imaging study.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Temporal lobe epilepsy is associated with regional abnormalities in tissue microstructure, as demonstrated by DTI. However, the full extent of these abnormalities has not yet been defined because DTI conveys only a fraction of the information potentially accessible with diffusion MR imaging. In this study, we assessed the added value of diffusional kurtosis imaging, an ex...
متن کاملNeuromyelitis optica: a diffusional kurtosis imaging study.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Conventional MR imaging typically yields normal images of the brain or indicates lesions in areas of high aquaporin expression in patients with neuromyelitis optica. Diffusional kurtosis imaging was applied in patients with neuromyelitis optica to determine whether this technique could detect alterations in diffusion and diffusional kurtosis parameters in normal-appearing...
متن کاملStroke assessment with diffusional kurtosis imaging.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Despite being the gold standard technique for stroke assessment, conventional diffusion MRI provides only partial information about tissue microstructure. Diffusional kurtosis imaging is an advanced diffusion MRI method that yields, in addition to conventional diffusion information, the diffusional kurtosis, which may help improve characterization of tissue microstructure...
متن کاملAssessment of Age-Related Microstructural Changes in the Thalamus by Diffusional Kurtosis Imaging
Figure 1. Significant (*) group mean differences were detected for Kra when compared the adolescent group with the young adult (p=0.004) and elderly group (p=0.01). The increase of Kra represents an increase in the microstructural complexity of the thalamus, possibly related to ongoing myelination and increase in fiber packing density. Assessment of Age-Related Microstructural Changes in the Th...
